Biking through historic Bangkok

WARNING  I think there is over 250 pictures on this post, about 90% of which I took while biking... so I am sorry for the long post but it should hopefully be entertaining!

Saturday morning pre- bike breakfast- oh dear bacon again...
view from the car driving... haven't really driven in a car since the airport ride at night so I was interested.

Still in the car on Khao San road where hippies and backpackers stay and hang out.  I loved this area and want to come hang out here during the day!  I saw plenty of room pants!
dreadlocks
 Hippie de bar looks fun!

view down Khao San road (we were lost and knew our bike shop was near here but couldn't find it)

 hippy genie pants
 We made it!  Grasshopper Adventures

getting our bikes and helmets picked out

  Woody our tour guide!
John is a pro we can tell already!
 Anne and Dave
Woody at first said to put cameras up that it would be difficult so this is the first pic I took when we arrived at the river.  Our first time to see it!!!

 Woody talking about Bangkok history!

2nd stop and talk about history

The group~John and I, Dave and Anne, and a couple from Vietnam visiting for a couple of days.

  2nd pow-wow in progress...
OK here is where I have decided to continue and take pics while biking!!!
That is John in front of me...

backward pic, worked ok... there were sad little dogs all along the route...
narrow spaces, this is nothing compared to later... don't worry though I take pics the WHOLE way and video!!!

WE HAVE TO PUSH OUR BIKE UP WHAT!!!

We made it!!  The stairs led to the top of the bridge (the yellow one that has been in pictures).

We thought it would rain but it didn't...

No that is not sweat on my shirt I had a little trouble operating my water bottle...  don't worry we will be mighty sweaty by the end of this!!

 trying to be creative...
here we go biking while photoging...

We went across the bridge and then had to carry the bike down the stairs and then ended up on the left side of the bridge going through neighborhoods.

 sad dog :(
 Stop at a temple!
 you leave your shoes outside...

Chinese tradition, you shake the can then pull out a stick with a number and then find the paper with your fortune!

We learned that there are many different Buddhas.  There is a Buddha for each day of the week.
Thais believe you have a Buddha associated with the day you were born.
 Shrines from other countries.
This temple is inactive and is right in the middle of  a neighborhood.

 Back on the bikes...

Stopped to look at another temple.

The two pieces on top (don't know the name) mean it's a Royal temple.
Plaques on the wall with the ashes stored behind them.

 carrying bikes over the bridge...

bells made from bomb remains from WWII

  Biking again...

 back by the bridge...
view from where we just came from...
Off to explore another neighborhood by the river.

Dave making sure I am coming, I am at the back and trying not to fall in the river while taking videos and pictures.  I will have to do a second post with the videos.
look how narrow this bridge is!!!!  We would NOT want to fall in!!

 watch your head!!
floating trash and A TURTLE!!!!  can you find him???
Dave attempting to find the turtle I am hollering about.

 YIKES!

 going over a bridge...

 stopped for more pics...

carry the bike down the stairs... don't worry we are almost to the half way point!

 HALF WAY POINT!!
We get to pick a drink and rest for a bit!
We are by the river so I ran over and took a quick pic because I haven't taken enough yet :).
  Pepsi!!  Coca Cola!

sweet lady who kept fanning us, thank you

sticky rice and Thai custard snack ~ yum!

 drink shop
 and we are off...

across the river by the bridge on the left is where we came out a while back...

 onto a ferry...
The ferry shuttles you across the river.

We are now walking our bikes through a busy market full of Buddhas.  I didn't know it is illegal to bring them back to the US.

 fruit stands everywhere

biking again near scary (on a bike) traffic

OK now we have to cross this road... oh dear...

 We made it!!!

OH NO we have to cross this road now!!

We did it!!  we are almost done I think...
 The Grand Palace!

Thai's can fit entire families on a motorcycle!
 our group!

SIDE NOTE:  I have been saying Sawadee ka (hello) to everyone (almost) I pass and Kob kun Kaa (thank you)... I have to practice right??!!

This is the official name of Bangkok, all of the gold writing...

ALMOST THERE~ it is right across this busy street of traffic we have to pass...

WOOOHOOOOOO!!!  We finished!  20 kilometers (~12 miles) and about 4 hours later!!!

  1. What a bike tour! I am surprised nobody was injured on that trip. Looked pretty scary to me. At least you are getting a good tour of the neighborhoods. I never knew there were so many different Buddhas. I bet you were exhausted at the end of that day. Your mom is coming tomorrow to visit us. We are going to eat chicken fried steak at Nate's. That is Dick's favorite. Thanks for sharing so many photos with us. BT
